Jason Pagara vs Cesar Chavez Preview Feb. 7th
There hasn’t been much in the way of big-name boxing action over the past couple of weeks, but there have still been some interesting bouts taking place. The same thing goes for this weekend as the WBO International Junior Welterweight Championship is at stake this Saturday, February 7 in Davao City, Philippines. This 12-round contest features titleholder Jason Pagara of the Philippines against challenger Cesar Chavez of Mexico. Pagara enters the ring with an impressive record of 34-2 along with 21 Kos while Chavez has a mark of 24-7 with 12 Kos to his name.
While neither of this boxers is really well known on the world stage, it should still be a competitive and possibly entertaining contest. Pagara said he’s not taking Chavez lightly and knows he has to beat the Mexican challenger of he hopes to earn some big-money fights against top-notch opponents. The Filipino champion is hoping to line up some bouts against boxers such as Danny Garcia, Chris Algieri and David Diaz.
The 22-year-old Pagara turned pro back in 2006 and hasn’t really met anybody the average boxing fan would have heard of. His two losses have come by a six-round unanimous decision to Rey Anton Olarte in 2007 and 10-round unanimous decision to Rosbei Montoya. He’s been hot lately though as Pagara hasn’t been beaten since back in September of 2011. He’s won his last seven outings with five of them coming by KO. The last time he stepped into the ring was last June when he earned a fourth-round stoppage over Mario Meraz of Mexico.
The 27-year-old Chavez may have somewhat of a famous name, but he’s not related to Julio Cesar Chavez. He turned pro back in 2009 and has won three consecutive bouts with all of them coming by stoppage. He may have just 12 Kos to his name, but he’s known to be a brawler who brings it every round. However, he also has seven defeats on his record. Before his three-fight winning streak began Chavez had dropped four straight fights. And to go from bad to worse, he was knocked out in all four of them within the first three rounds. In fact, Chavez has been stopped in all seven of his losses, so it’s quite obvious that he doesn’t take a punch very well.
Prediction
When it comes to experience, Pagara has gone 213 rounds as a pro while Chavez has 120 under his belt. Chavez’s chin is going to be a huge question mark in this fight since it appears it may be nonexistent. Pagara has pretty good power with 21 Kos in his 34 wins and this bout will come down to that power against Chavez’s chin. Pagara also has good speed and that’s going to cause a problem for the challenger. Chavez has to keep the champion off of him if he hopes to take his title, but that’s not likely going to happen for the entire 12 rounds. Look for Pagara to retain his belt by a stoppage on Saturday night.
