While his brothers Floyd and Roger worked the corner of Floyd Mayweather Jr. this past weekend, Jeff Mayweather sat just a few rows from the ring watching with the thousands of other spectators at the MGM Grand Areana in Las Vegas, as his nephew won a unanimous decision against Robert Guerrero. Just like nearly all those who watched the fight, he was more than impressed with what he saw from the undefeated champion.
Most boxing analysts and experts, along with the public in general, believed that Floyd Mayweather would be too much for challenger Robert Guerrero to handle. And for nearly all of the 12 round fight, they were proven correct. Floyd would cruise to an easy victory, extending his unbeaten record to 44-0.
For the first time in years, Floyd Mayweather Sr. joined his son’s camp, which was perhaps the most intriguing part of the entire match up. However, there was very little tension between the two. Instead it was Guerrero’s dad Ruben, who had the problem with the elder Mayweather. The pair engaged in a bitter war of words with repeated challenges to fight each other, which was the subject internet message boards everywhere.
As is his usual style, Jeff Mayweather remained low key throughout the entire camp of his nephew. Although he works out of the same gym, he doesn’t have an active part in preparing Floyd Mayweather in the ring. However, he often works behind the scenes on various projects for his nephew.
Just because he does not have a hands on approach with Floyd, does not mean he does not keep a close eye on things. In talking with Jeff, he discusses the plan going in to the fight, as well as how well it was executed. Despite Mayweather suffering an apparent hand injury in the middle rounds, Jeff Mayweather seems to feel that he performed about as well as could be expected.
Following some discussion on the fight, Jeff talks about the possibilities for Floyd’s next opponent, and why Saul Alvarez is likely not theat guy. He also concludes with a little talk about other members of The Money Team, and how well they performed on the same card.
