The moniker, “Lions Only” reverberated amongst the sold out crowd inside the NRG Arena in Houston, Texas, Saturday night, after Jermall “Hitman” Charlo (29-0, 21KOs) defended his WBC Middleweight title against Brandon “The Hammer” Adams (21-3,13KOs). The more than 6400 attendees saw a dominating display of boxing generalship as the older of the Charlo twins put on a clinic against the 2018 winner of the Epix revived series, “The Contender.”
Charlo was in control throughout the fight. However, he could not get the KO for his hometown fans. Adams chin was misrepresented or Charlo’s power has not translated to the middleweight division. Either way, Charlo was content with walking down a battered Adams as he cruised to victory. It was Charlo’s first defense of his newly awarded WBC middleweight championship. After the fight, Charlo praised Adams, “he came out boxing. Nobody expected him to last this long. He took punishment.”
As for the next victim on the Hitman’s list, Charlo is chomping at the bit to take down the current superstars of the division, “ Canelo has done a great job of being a champ, Golovkin also. Those guys are at the top but, there’s always a young underdog and a lion ready to take over. That’s me.” Doubtful, Charlo will have such an easy time with Golovkin or Canelo. However, Charlo owned the night with his unanimous decision victory. Scores were 120-108 x2 and 119-109.
