Undefeated Jermell Charlo of Richmond, Texas will be battling it out with Joachim Alcine of Haiti at the NRG Arena in Houston on Saturday, October 31st. This 10 round junior middleweight tilt is a part of the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) series and can be seen live in North America on the NBCSN network. Charlo’s twin brother Jermall recently won a version of the junior middleweight title by stopping former champion Cornelius Bundrage in the third round.
The 25-year-old Charlo climbs through the ring ropes with a perfect mark of 26-0 with 11 Kos to his name. The 39-year-old Alcine, who has fought his professional career out of Montreal Canada, is a former WBA Junior Middleweight champion, and sports a record of 35-7-2 along with 21 Kos. Alcine is also known for beating former middleweight titlist David Lemieux by a majority decision back in 2011. However, things definitely turned south after that big win as Alcine then proceeded to lose five straight bouts. However, he’s bounced back with two victories by stoppage and a draw in his last three outings. His last fight was a 10-round draw with Delvin Rodriguez in Montreal back in May of last year.
Charlo’s last fight was in March when he beat veteran Vanes Martirosyan by a 10-round unanimous decision in Las Vegas. It was Charlo’s fourth straight unanimous-decision win with the other three coming a year earlier. Alcine has the edge in experience in this fight and he’s also used to fighting at a heavier weight. However, he gives up 14 years in age and also comes in second best when it comes to hand speed ad footwork. And let’s not forget, he’s more or less fighting in Charlo’s backyard.
Charlo stands 5-feet-11-inches tall and has a reach of 73 inches. He’s fought 167 rounds since turning pro back in 2007 and his current knockout ratio stands at 42 per cent. Alcine is half an inch shorter, but has the same reach as his opponent. He has 283 pro rounds under his belt since 1999 and owns a knockout ratio of 48 per cent. Alcine has been stopped four times in his seven losses by Daniel Santos, Brian Rose, Matthew Macklin and Alfredo Angulo. He’s also been beaten by Francisco Santana, Omar Chavez and Julian Williams.
There’s no doubt Alcine’s chin isn’t the greatest and he often comes up short when facing top-level opposition. Charlo’s also beaten Harry Joe Yorgey, Demetrius Hopkins and Gabriel Rosado along the way and Alcine will be one of his better opponents. Charlo isn’t quite as good as his twin brother, but is anxious to follow him as a world champion. He knows if he can’t beat an aging boxer such as Alcine then he’s going to find it hard to achieve his goal of wearing a world title belt.
Prediction
Alcine’s been out of action for about 15 months and that’s not going to help him. He’s up against a younger and quicker fighter in Charlo and even though he’ll have his moments, won’t be able to keep up with the younger fighter. Look for Charlo to remain unbeaten via a unanimous decision or stoppage in the second half of the bout.
