A couple of nights ago in San Antonio, Keith Thurman (21-0, 19 KO’s) passed a stout test when he knocked out Diego Chaves in a fun fight that aired on Showtime. Now, he has Adrien Broner directly in his sights.
With the victory, Thurman captured the WBA interim belt, while Adrien Broner claimed the WBA title from Paulie Malignaggi in their fight last month.
Keith Thurman says that fans have expressed a lot of interest in the potential showdown.
“It’s a great fight. I get tweets. I get Facebooked. Everybody wants to see me and Broner. We’ll have to see what the future holds. He didn’t really have the best performance against Paulie. His speed was there, but his power wasn’t there in the welterweight division. It’s a tremendous fight because he’s a young fighter, and I’m a young fighter. He’s athletic, and I’m athletic.”
As Thurman mentioned, Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) didn’t have his best night against Paulie Malignaggi on June 22, and it remains to be seen if Broner will continue to compete at 147 pounds. If he does remain at welterweight, most people seem to think his next likely opponent would be Marcos Maidana, with few mentioning Keith Thurman as a possibility.
Another possible roadblock for a Thurman-Broner encounter, is that both fighters are represented by Al Haymon. While that is no longer the deal breaker it used to be, it seems unlikely Haymon would be willing to put two of his most promising up-and-coming fighters together at this early stage in their careers.
