Lanardo Tyner reflects on his career and coming to TMT

By Jody Kohn

Lanardo Tyner has had a nice, if not great career.  However, much of that may be due to circumstances rather than talent.  Starting his career at the advanced age of 29, Tyner has become more of an “opponent” than a man who has been a headline fighter.  Going the distance with such talents as Canelo Alvarez, Jessie Vargas and Lamont Peterson has shown that he is no easy out.  Unfortunately, because he has taken many of these fights on short notice, he has not been able to properly prepare.  Still he has come close to pulling some of them out, and if you ask him, he may have even won some, despite what the judges may have said.

Now things may be looking up for the Detroit native.  Following yet another tough defeat, this time to TMT fighter Chris Pearson, Tyner was invited out to Las Vegas to help prepare Floyd Mayweather for his fight against Marcos Maidana.  Tyner has evidently impressed the pound-for-pound king, because he says that he has been invited to join the team.  If that’s the case, no longer will he be just an “opponent.”  For a change, he will be given all the advantages having a guy like Mayweather behind him can afford.

Proper promotion, a full training camp, and everything else it takes to compete at his best will now be available for the 38-year old.  He can let his talents take him as far as they are able, without the need to take short notice fights just to land a paycheck.  And for Tyner, he believes that despite his advanced age, there is still plenty left in his tank.

“I’m a bad mother fucker,” Tyner said.
