The Money Team completed an impressive 6-0 run on Saturday night, when in the main event, Floyd Mayweather cruised to an easy decision over Robert Guerrero. Prior to that, fans were witness to impressive performances by fighters like Badou Jack and Luis Arias, as well as a much closer fight when J’Leon Love took a split decision nod over Gabe Rosado.
However, you can’t run off six straight wins without capturing the very first. So when Lanell Bellows took the ring in the very first fight on the card Saturday evening, he was to serve as a barometer for how the rest of the night would go for his team.
It didn’t take long for Bellows to show those in attendance that it was going to be a good night for himself, as well as the others to follow. Though his opponent was visibly much larger, Bellows was able to hurt his opponent, Matt Garretson early and often with a barrage of big shots. In both the first and third rounds, it appeared that Bellows was close to finishing the fight. However, Garretson was able to hold on.
In the fourth round, Bellows went for the kill, finally finishing off the previously undefeated fighter just 32 seconds into the round. The accumulated beating Garretson had received was finally enough for referee Kenny Bayless to step in and make the save, improving Bellows’ record to 4-0-1.
The win had to be particularly sweet for Bellows considering his last outing. In that contest, he scored a draw that was considered to be a gift by many. Improper preparation pre-fight was part of the problem as he was in a swing bout and had his fight change time several times.
Considering the records and talents of members of The Money Team, it had to provide a lot of pressure for Bellows to perform and show that he truly belongs. Not only did he prove he belongs, but he shined. Along with Jack, who scored a third round knockout over Michael Gbenga, he probably gave the most impressive performance of all the fighters on the undercard.
Building off the momentum of that performance, and considering the work ethic he is known for, the future looks bright for Lanell Bellows, one of the most popular fighters in the Mayweather Boxing Club.
