Before they compete in the ring in September, Floyd Mayweather and Saul Alvarez will square off at the ESPY Awards on July 17. Both fighters were nominated in the category of “Best Fighter.”
Competing for the award along with Mayweather and Alvarez will be fellow boxer Danny Garcia, as well as MMA competitors Jon Jones and Anderson Silva. It is the first nomination for Garcia and Alvarez, and the third each for Jones and Silva.
In 2012 Floyd Mayweather captured the same award, beating out both Jones and Silva, as well as fellow unbeaten boxer Andre Ward. It was the fourth time he won an ESPY, also winning in 2007, 2008 and 2010. The basis for his win last year was his performance against both Miguel Cotto and Victor Ortiz.
Unfortunately for Floyd Mayweather in 2012, he was unable to attend the awards as he was serving his 90-day jail sentence at the time.
The ESPY Awards air on ESPN on July 17 and is an annual ceremony that celebrates athletic achievements throughout the year. Each award is voted on by the fans, sports writers, broadcasters, sports executives and sports personalities. Fans may log onto ESPN.com up until that date and vote for the different categories. Voting is open right until the show goes on the air.
Floyd Mayweather will get it on for real at the MGM in Las Vegas in September. In that fight, one fighter will taste defeat for the very first time.
