Mayweather targets the UK

Floyd Mayweather will promote a British fight card this year as a thank you to his fans. ‘Money’ Mayweather plans to stage a show that will be headlined by Londoner Ashley Theophane. The world’s number one boxer made his revelation ahead of Saturday’s megamatch against WBA Super and WBC light-middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas that is being televised live and exclusive in the UK on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).

Mayweather said: “Mayweather Promotions is coming to the UK for my fans at the end of the year.

“They have supported me for a long time and the card will be for them. This is more than just an idea.”

Ironically, Theophane boxes on ‘The One’ undercard when he faces good Mexican Pablo Cesar Cano.

Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe added: “Floyd has just signed a British fighter Ashley Theophane who we believe will perform well this weekend.

“Floyd wants to showcase Ashley and other boxers in the Mayweather team because the UK has the best fans and show a lot of love for Floyd.

“We have a great relationship with BoxNation and perhaps they will get behind the show.”

When Mayweather and Alvarez made their customary grand arrivals at the MGM Grand on Tuesday, thousands of fans packed into the hotel’s lobby.

It brought back memories of the British invasion when Ricky Hatton was supported by 35,000 fans in the world’s fight capital when he lost to Mayweather in December 2007.

Ellerbe said: “This was special, but I have never experience anything like the atmosphere when Ricky fought Floyd.

“I can recall coming into the MGM lobby at 3am for meeting and all you could hear was Hatton fans singing.”

Hear more from Mayweather and Ellerbe at 7pm tonight (Wednesday) on BoxNation’s ‘Countdown to the One’.
