Despite having turned pro just this year, Michael Hunter has more experience in boxing then other fighters with dozens of fights under their belts. A former Olympian and sparring partner to the Klitschko brothers, as well as a gym rat during his father’s career, there isn’t much that Hunter has not seen in his 25 years.
Now as he looks to build a professional career that will ultimately lead to what he hopes will be multiple world championships, he has settled in at the Mayweather Boxing Club where many other fighters have similar dreams. So far, so good, as he made a successful pro debut back in March with a third round knockout over Chad Davis in Phoenix.
One familiar face he sees (and battles) in the gym is fellow amateur standout Andrew Tabiti, who Hunter defeated on his way to qualifying for the Olympics in 2012. The pair have a friendly rivalry, tearing it up during sparring, but offering strong support to each other when outside the ring. Tabiti is looking at his own professional debut just next week.
But perhaps the oddest pairing can be seen during Hunter’s frequent battles inside (and out) of the ring with King Mo, an MMA fighter who spends much of his time training his stand up with his coach Jeff Mayweather. The pair like to go back and forth, trading verbal insults, as well as exchanging leather. It’s all in good fun though, as Mo genuinely appreciates Hunter’s skills and is eager to learn from him.
One big change Hunter has made, is the addition of Jeff Mayweather to his own team. Although he has known Mayweather for years, the pair had never worked together on a professional level. Now with Jeff in his corner, Hunter believes that he will only get better, particularly from a defensive perspective.
Check out what Hunter had to say after his workout a few days ago. We have also included some of his intense sparring with Tabiti and some fun with King Mo.
