Los Mochis, Mexico – Rogelio Medina (29-2, 23KOs) survived two knockdowns to stop
Luis David Serrano (13-2, 10KOs) within six rounds of action to win the vacant WBC silver middleweight title.
During the first round action, Medina went down from a good counter shot. Medina did not seem very hurt and did his best to fight back. At the start of the second round, Serrano dropped Medina for a second time. Medina was again very aggressive once he beat the count and started working over Serrano with hard shots to the body. Serrano was fighting back hard but he was slowing down as Medina stayed on pace with hard combinations to the head and body. At the start of the sixth round, Serrano stayed on his stool and indicated that he was unable to continue.
Top rated featherweight Mikey Garcia (29-0, 25KOs) stoped faded champion Mauricio Pestrana (35-16-2 23KOs) in two rounds. Pestrana was dropped in the second for the full count. Garcia will face WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido next.
Adrian Young (17-0-1, 15KOs) secured the biggest win of his growing career with an eight round unanimous decision over Raul Hirales (16-2, 8KOs) in a tough super bantamweight contest. The scores were 77-74, 78-73 and 77-75.
Hirales, the much more experienced fighter, went right after Young in the first round. He pressed forward and would pin the younger boxer against the ropes to bully him with combinations. Young was attacking in the fourth and started swelling up the face of Hirales. Hirales suffered a cut, and swelling, above the right eye. In the seventh round, a bad cut opened up around the left eye of Young. In the eight round, Hirales went down after getting caught by a hard counter. He beat the count and started going to war with Young, who fought back with hard shots.
