(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Female featherweight JaJaira Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.) won the first gold medal of the inaugural Junior World Team Open in Reno, Nev., on Tuesday evening. The female featherweight championship bout was the final contest of the night with 10 bouts of action being contested on opening day. Gonzalez finished the night with a bang, taking the title with a stoppage win over Anna Crutchfield (Travelers Rest, S.C.).
Gonzalez won a third round stoppage win over Crutchfield as the referee called a halt to the bout at the 1:57 mark to give her the Junior World Team Open title. The event opened with nine bouts in male action and the light flyweight division kicked off the competition with several close opening round bouts. Two young boxers pulled out tiebreaker victories with Izaiah Bautista (Hercules, Calif.) and Daniel Gonzalez (Moreno Valley, Calif.) each moving in on with razor thin wins.
Hometown boxer Alex Rodriguez (Sparks, Nev.) pulled out a 17-15 decision over Andrew Weaver (Zanesville, Ohio) in his first bout of the tournament in the bantamweight division. 2012 Veles Cup team member Edgar Berlanga (Brooklyn, N.Y.) claimed the final win in the male division, defeating Ferdinand Kerobyan (California), 16-11 in the lone light middleweight bout of the night.
Action will resume tonight at 6 p.m. with eight tournament bouts in the men’s light bantamweight, bantamweight and featherweight as well as two non-tournament contests in the female division. The bout sheet can be found below.

MCJOE ARROYO AND JONATHAN “BOMBA” GONZALEZ WILL FACE RODRIGO GUERRERO AND CARLOS RUBEN DARIO RUIZ ON FEBRUARY 2 IN BAYAMON, PUERTO RICO
The undefeated McJoe Arroyo and Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez will have their toughest tests on February 2 when they face Rodrigo “Gatito” Guerrero and Carlos Ruben Dario Ruiz at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in a show will headlined by the former two time world champion Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez in a PR Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP) presentation in association with Top Rank, to be broadcasted on DIRECTV Pay Per View.
“With these two rivals we complete the main fights of the program. Definitely, Guerrero and Dario Ruiz are the toughest foes for McJoe and Bomba Gonzalez, it will be a good show”, PRBBP Vice-President Peter Rivera said.
McJoe Arroyo (11-0, 6 KOs), a former 2008 Olympian and 2007 Amateur World Championship bronze medalist, will face former IBF superflyweight champion Rodrigo “Gatito” Guerrero (18-4-1, 12 KOs), for the WBO Latino superflyweight title in a fight scheduled to 12 rounds. McJoe, the WBO #9 ranked in the superflyweight division, is coming off a four round TKO win over former world champion Jose “Carita” Lopez in September, 2012. Guerrero, from Mexico, was the IBF 115lb champion between 2011 and 2012 when he lost the belt against Juan Carlos Sanchez Jr. Actually, Guerrero, who has faced former champions Vic Darchinyan and Juan Alberto Rosas, is ranked #4 by the IBF in the superflyweights.
Meanwhile, the WBO Youth flyweight champion, Bomba Gonzalez (11-0, 10 KOs) will fight against the Argentine Carlos Ruben Dario Ruiz (14-2, 9 KOs), who is the WBO #11 ranked in the flyweight division. Bomba Gonzalez, a 2008 Amateur Youth World champion and 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games gold medalist, is ranked #12 by the WBO in the flyweights.
Headlining this card, former WBO superbantanweight and featherweight champion Juanma Lopez (31-2, 28 KOs) will face Aldimar Silva Santos (18-3, 9 KOs), from Brazil, in a fight scheduled to 10 rounds in 128 pounds. Lopez is actually the #5 ranked by the WBO in the featherweight division.
The WBO #1 lightweight ranked and WBO Latino lightweight champion, Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez (21-0, 16 KOs), will face Al Sabaupan (20-1-1, 15 KOs), from Philippines, in a fight scheduled to 12 rounds. Sabaupan is ranked #9 by the IBF in the lightweights and #15 by the WBO in the junior welter division.
While, McWilliams Arroyo (13-1, 11 KOs), the #6 WBO ranked in the flyweights and WBO Latino flyweight champion, will fight versus former world champion Sonny Boy Jaro (34-11-5, 24 KOs) in a 12 round bout. Jaro, who held the WBC flyweight title in 2012, is ranked #4 by the WBC in the flyweights.
