News: Groves-Johnson, Evensen Back; Maddalone

Glen Johnson has promised to give George Groves a butt kicking when they meet at the ExCeL London on Saturday 15th December.

The Miami based Jamaican challenges Groves for his Commonwealth Super-Middleweight title on promoter Frank Warren’s big end of year extravaganza that also features WBO World Lightweight Champion Ricky Burns and Commonwealth Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).

Johnson, a former IBF World Light-Heavyweight Champion, squashes 15-fight Groves in fight experience with an incredible 70 fights under his belt in a near 20-year career and has faced some of boxing’s biggest names including Roy Jones Jnr, Antonio Tarver, Chad Dawson, Bernard Hopkins and Carl Froch.

“From what I’ve seen of Groves he’s a good strong kid with lots of talent and he’s coming up in the sport and I know he’ll be looking to do a number on me,” Said Johnson.

“I’ve faced the best in the business over the years against the like of Jones, Tarver, Hopkins and I believe that I’m a better all round fighter.  Groves will not show me anything that I haven’t seen before, he’s got the youth, but I’ve got the experience and that will count for plenty,”

“He’s only had 15 fights, it shows he’s got plenty of ambition and hunger to want to face me and that’s admirable for a young fighter, but he’ll see that he’s bitten off more than he can chew.”

Known as the Road Warrior for having no fear fighting anywhere in the world – this will be Johnson’s fifth fight in the England that includes beating Sheffield hero Clinton Woods in his hometown in 2004 – and is confident of pulling off an upset against the London star.

He added, “I love coming to England and I’m looking forward to returning to London where I beat Toks Owoh back in 2000,”

“I’ve boxed all over the world and the fans in England are something special.  They love their boxing and really get behind their man and I know that they will be chanting Groves’ name going in, but they’ll be chanting me on the way out,”

“I know what I’ve got to do and I’m coming to England to kick Groves’ butt.”

Groves v Johnson features as chief support on a massive five-title card headlined by Ricky Burns’ WBO World Lightweight title defence; plus Commonwealth Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders defends his title against Nick Blackwell with the vacant British title also on the line; unbeaten Bradley Skeete challenges Southern Area Welterweight Champion Chas Symonds for his title and WBO International Cruiserweight Champion Tony Conquest defends against Neil Dawson.
