Porter defeats Gomez, undercard results

San Jose, California — Shawn Porter (20-0, 14 KOs) defeated Alfonso Gomez (23-6-2, 12 KOs) by a ten round unanimous decision. Porter suffered a cut in the first round as a result of a clash of heads. The fight was fought at a high pace, with Porter using his speed and energy to out maneuver Gomez. Another cut opened Porter’s left eye in the ninth, with yet another clash of heads. After ten rounds, Porter was just too quick and his combination punching was the difference. The scores were 96-94, 97-93 and 98-92. The bout was fought at the welterweight limit.

Undercard-

Hugo Centeno (15-0, 8KOs) out boxed Aydi Bruce (14-8, 8KOs) in every round, to win a virtual shutout victory in a Jr. middleweight fight. The scores were 79-73 and 80-72 twice.

George Groves (15-0, 12KOs) halted Francscio Sierra (24-6-1, 22KOs) in round six. Groves, who is the British/Commonwealth super middleweight champion, suffered a cut on his right eye in the third round, as a result of a headbutt. The bout was an entertaining slugfest. Sierra’s corner threw in the towel after Sierra did not respond well, after getting up from a knockdown.

Paul Mendez (8-2, 2KOs) decisioned fellow super middleweight, Leshon Simms (5-11, 3KOs) in six rounds. All three scores were exactly the same, 59-55.

Heavyweight Gerald Washington (1-0, 1KO) stopped Blue Delong (0-4) in the opening round. After Delong was knockdown a few times, the referee stepped in and awarded the fight to Washington.
