We have just arrived ringside here at the joint in Las Vegas. The first few fights are over, and I have no idea who won. Fightnews.com is usually pretty good at covering those things. Here we go!!!
Preliminary action
Jeremiah Wiggins (10-1-1 5 Ko’s) vs. Julian Williams (10-0-1 5 KO’s)-
Not much too exciting early other than the cornerman for Wiggins who is quite entertaining to listen to. The first goes to Wiggins who pulled out a Sugar Ray Leonard stealing rounds against Hagler thing, minus the talent part.
The second round was a repeat of the first. Quite a lot of body work, not just in the ring, but with a lot of women seated ringside. I give the second to Williams, but it was close.
The third saw Wiggins cut off the ring, dictating most of the action. However, a flurry of huge shots at the end of the round by Williams stuns Wiggins who is lucky there wasn’t another 10 seconds left. Still, Wiggins takes the round.
In the fourth it’s all Williams early. Williams loses his mouthpiece and gets a few seconds to recover. Williams continues to tee off, collected a standing 8 count along the way. Wiggins looks to be in huge trouble heading into the fifth. 10-8 round for Williams.
In the fifth, Williams starts to slow. He may have shot his wad, ala Ron Jeremy. Wiggins is the busier fighter, although Williams’ punches appear to have more sting. Giving that one to Wiggins.
The sixth offers more of the same. Every punch Williams throws seems to do significant damage, while Wiggins has little sting behind his. Wiggins hanging in there though. 10-9 Williams.
Seventh round action starts with more huge shots from Williams. At 1:05 of the round, Wiggins’ corner has seen enough and throws in the towel. Wiggins is pissed. He gives the ref a shove in anger at the stoppage, not knowing the towel had been thrown in.
Winner by TKO Julian Williams…….Williams
Francisco Vargas (13-0-1 10 KO’s) vs. Ira Terry (26-10 16 KO’s)
First is your standard fare. It’s mostly a feeling out process, much like my first date with Leigh Kaye (last name witheld) back in high school. I’ll give it to Vargas.
Vargas is all over Terry like a discount sticker on a Huey Lewis CD to start the second. A monster right sends Terry crashing to the canvas, bringing an end to the action.
Editors note- The ring girls aren’t bad. Could be better, but compared to some of these cards, not too bad.
Errol Spence Jr. (2-0 2 KO’s) vs. Nathan Butcher (0-1)
In one of the bigger mismatches in talent you will ever see, Spence dominates from the opening bell. The fight is waived off shortly into the round as Butcher looks like he had no idea he was going to be in there with a real fighter. 1:03 round one is the time of the TKO. The look on Butcher’s face was priceless. It was kind of like the West Virginian realized after months of dating a girl that she wasn’t really his sister.
