Toa Baja, Puerto Rico -Lightweight sensation Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez (20-0, 15 KOs) stopped Joseph Laryea (14-8, 11 KOs) in the third round. Gonzalez had an upper hand in the first round, landing body shots. “Chelo” continued to find success with his body shots in the second. Laryea retired between the second and third rounds because of a right hand wrist injury.
Junior middleweight prospect Glen Tapia (14-0, 8 KOs) knocked out Carlos Garcia (6-11-1, 6 KOs) in the first round of a schedule 6 round jr. middleweight bout. Tapia came out early in the first using his jab and connecting well. Mid way through the round, Tapia landed a thunderous right hand that had Garcia down and out.
Andres Navarro (7-4-1, 4 KOs) defeated Rafael Gonzalez (7-1, 6 KOs) by a eight round unanimous decision. Both fighters came out slugging in opening round with Navarro having the slight edge, connecting more meaningful punches. In the second, Navarro used his aggressiveness to corner Gonzalez and let loose on his punches. Gonzales had his best round in the third, landing with his right hand. The fight went back to slugging mode, in the fourth from the beginning to the end but Gonzalez suffered a cut. The fifth round was hard to score as both fighters are going blow for blow. Gonzalez and Navarro continue to delight the crowd fighting at short range, once again in the six round. Things did not change much in the seventh as the telephone booth fight continued. The fight has been almost fought at even terms. Navarro closed out strong in the eighth and final round. In reality, the fight was a fight of the year candidate The bout was at the lightweight limit.
