Ricardo Mayorga has win overturned

The strange trip of former boxing star, Ricardo Mayorga, into the world of MMA took yet another strange twist when his May 3 win over Wesley Tiffer was changed to a no-contest by the Nicaraguan MMA commission.

Prior to the contest, Mayorga tipped the scales at 175.9 pounds, well over the lightweight limit, for the fight that was part of the “Battle of the Americas” card in Managua, Nicaragua.  Despite the size difference, the bout went on with scheduled, with Tiffer weighing just 153 pounds.

Despite the difference in size, it was Tiffer who repeatedly took down the larger Mayorga during the 10-minute contest.  However, late in the second round, Mayorga landed what appeared to be a knee to the spine while attempting to escape an armbar attempt.

Despite the blow, the referee in charge called no foul, and Tiffer was not cleared to continue by the cageside doctor following the second round.  Mayorga was awarded a TKO victory.

However, this past weekend, Nicaraguan commission chairman Zack Asagary announced that the victory would be changed to a no-contest.  Furthermore, Mayorga was to be suspended for three months.

During his career as a boxer, Mayorga was a world champion at both 147 and 154-pounds.  His last appearance was back in March of 2011, when he was defeated by Miguel Cotto.

In 2010, he was supposed to make his MMA debut against Din Thomas.  However, that entire card was canceled by the North Carolina Boxing Authority before it could ever take place.
