In what was certainly not one of his brighter moments, Robert Guerrero was arrested Thursday morning at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York for attempting to board a plane bound for Las Vegas with a gun.
Guerrero, 30, is scheduled to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4, in the biggest fight of his career. But first, he is scheduled to be arraigned on gun-possession charges later on Thursday.
Guerrero lives in California, but is training for the fight in Las Vegas. He was on the East Coast doing promotional work for Showtime, which will be handling the pay-per-view event. This is certainly not the kind of promotional work they were counting on, however.
In a bit of an ironic twist, one of the appearances Guerrero made was on the “700 Club,” which is hosted by Pat Robertson. Additionally, he visited the ESPN studios and hosted a media lunch in New York on Tuesday.
Following the media tour, he was preparing to head back to Las Vegas to resume training when, multiple reports say he tried to carry an unloaded gun onto a Delta flight.
The gun, according to Fox New York, was a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun. There was apparently no ammunition on him, however.
According to reports, Guerrero disclosed while at ticket counter that he had the gun. The police were then called in. Guerrero has a permit in California, but not in New York. Unfortunately for Robert Guerrero, the laws there are among the toughest in the nation.
It remains to be seen if this will impact the upcoming fight. Legal matters may be a more pressing concern for Guerrero at this point. His judgement is certainly open to question as the chance to challenge Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a huge opportunity, both financially and in prestige. Doing something so careless makes one wonder how serious he is taking the entire thing.
