Former IBF Welterweight Champion Shawn Porter of Akron, Ohio will be returning to the ring on Friday, March 13 when he takes on Roberto Garcia of Mexico in a 10-round bout in Ontario, California. The fight will be broadcast live on Spike TV in North America while fans in the UK can catch the action on BoxNation. Porter recently lost his first pro bout and his title via a majority decision to Kell Brook of England last August.
The 27-year-old will enter the ring with an impressive record of 24-1-1 with 15 Kos while the 33-year-old Garcia is 36-3 with 23 Kos to his name. Porter has decent power, but typically has to land several clean shots in succession to stop an opponent while Garcia possesses a bit more pop in his fists. Garcia is currently on an eight-fight winning streak and is looking for the biggest name on his resume in Porter. He also has a solid chin and hasn’t been stopped in his career.
Garcia’s last defeat was in May of 2010 when Antonio Margarito beat him by a 10-round unanimous decision. However, even though he hasn’t been stopped, he’s been dropped by Margarito and Breidis Prescott. He should know what to expect from Garcia since the two have sparred with each other in the past. We all know that sparring sessions don’t mean much though, especially when they take place between friends. Both guys should be all business once the opening bell sounds Friday night.
Porter will be hungry as he wants to regain a title belt and knows he needs to win this fight to get near the top of the line. He’s fast, compact and powerful with a good chin and aggressiveness. He’s fought 145 rounds since turning pro in 2008 and has faced the likes of Devon Alexander, Julio Diaz, Paulie Malignaggi and Alfonso Gomez. He’s 5-feet-7-inches tall with a reach just under 70 inches. Garcia stands 5-10 with a 73-inch wingspan and has fought 206 rounds since turning pro in 2001.
Prediction
Porter has youth on his side and slightly better boxing skills, but this looks to be a stiff test for both boxers. Garcia is bigger and has a harder punch, but Porter has the edge in speed and footwork. Since they both have dependable chins there’s a good chance this goes the distance, especially since it’s 10 rounds. Look for Porter to land more crisp punches due to his accuracy and superior speed. Garcia should have his moments, but in the end Porter should take this bout by a decision.
