Australian middleweight Les Sherrington (29-6, 17 KOs) was impressive in winning a twelve round decision over former IBF world champion Luis Ramon “Yory Boy” Campas (100-17-1, 79 KOs) to capture the WBF world and IBF Pan Pacific titles at Broadbeach Convention Center, Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia on Saturday. Sherrington was cautious in the early rounds and used clever footwork to avoid the heavy handed and aggressive Campas while connecting with long range combinations. The rangy Sherrington exploded a solid right off the Mexican’s jaw in round three that staggered the visitor. Campas stepped up a gear in rounds five and six and delivered accurate head and body shots consistently to outwork the Australian.
Referee Chris Anderson warned Campas in round seven for low blows in what was a very evenly contested round as both boxers went toe-to-toe. Sherrington gained control in round eight and in round ten Campas was visibly in trouble from head shots. Sherrington and Campas swapped heavy blows in the final two rounds but it was Sherrington that was having the edge as delivered accurate four and five punch combo’s to be awarded the decision by scores of 118-110, 117-111, 118-110.
Promoter Joe Penissi said “Les was impressive tonight against Yory Boy who showed he has plenty left in the tank at 40 years of age and is deserving of one of the best records in boxing scoring a 100 wins with only 17 losses and 79 KO’s.” Brendon Smith who trains Les “is confident Sherrington can win the world title and we have the financial backing to promote this championship contest in Australia.”
Campas’ trainer Joe Diaz said “Campas was in great shape for this fight but Sherrington showed he is world class tonight. I want to thank the promoter Joe Penissi and also the Australian people who have treated us so well.”
In supporting scheduled eight round bout Filipino 130 pounderJack Asis (26-18-4, 14 KOs) chopped down Japanese Ryusei Yoshida (22-3, 10 KOs) in seven action rounds. Yoshida was down in round one and twice in round seven and Asis was crowned winner at 2:29 by referee Adrian Cairns. In 2011 Asis scored the best win of his career when he stopped IBF rated Nestor Rocha in two rounds.
In other action Australian based Irish middleweight, Dennis Hogan (10-0-1, 4 KOs) outscored Arnel Tinampay (17-14-1, 5 KOs) over eight action packed rounds that had the fans cheering throughout. The former Manny Pacquiao sparring partner, Tinampay, showed he came to fight as he stayed in Hogan’s face and swapped heavy blows from round one. Hogan found the range in round three for his heavy artillery and visibly hurt the Filipino with savage rips and hooks to the head and body. Referee Phil Austin crowned Hogan winner by scores 79-73, 78-74, 80-72.
Classy featherweight Braydon Smith (4-0, 4 KOs) scored a six round stoppage of Wanpadejseuk Or Benjamad (2-15, 2 KOs). Smith connected consistently in all rounds with accurate punches that had the Thai boxer in no condition to continue and his corner retired him at the conclusion of round five. Promoter Joe Penissi.
