SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO- The fight is billed as “The War”. Puerto Rico’s Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-2-1, 18 KOs) will take on Mexico’s Rafael Marquez (41-7, 37 KOs) on August 4 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez. It will be the next chapter of the Puerto Rican-Mexican boxing rivalry that has giving the sport, memorable encounters. Vazquez, is coming off a lost against pound for pound elite, Nonito Donaire back in Febuary. Although it was a defeat, Vazquez Jr. managed to do better than most expected, losing on a 12 round split decision. Marquez last fought on May 5th, wiping out former champion, Eric Aiken in less than a round. Both former champions, greeted each other and gave respect to one another.
This what Vazquez told Marquez at the press conference….
“I know who you are, and I want to let everyone know that I am not despising you, because a lot people are saying you’re an old man. And I am proparing myself well for a great fight. And I want to tell you do not worry. I am giving you my word like a gentleman and sportsman, that if you come out with a deserving victory, you will have it, or if I come out victorious, same thing for me. Great fighters fight against great fighters.”
Marquez expressed this….
“We already have been training for a month and a half and we are coming to Puerto Rico to give everything. Here they know what kind of fighter I am and am coming to give a great battle in the ring.”
In other action, Rocky Martínez (25-1-1, 16 KOs) will face Miguel Beltrán Jr. (27-1, 17 KOs) for the NABO jr. welterweight title. Martinez last fought ten months ago when he stopped Daniel Attah in six rounds, to become the WBO Inter-Continental super featherweight champion. Beltran Jr. last bout took place in May when he won a six round unanimous decision over Carlos Parra. This will be another contest that will feature a Puerto Rican versus a Mexican fighter.
