Weekend Scoop: Quigg-Munroe, Rabchenko-Rhodes & more

*A clash of heads prematurely ended the championship match between Scott Quigg (24-0-1, 17 KOs) and Rendall Munroe (24-2-1, 10 KOs). Munroe suffered a cut over his right eye in the third round when both men butted heads and the fight was stopped. The bout was declared a draw and the WBA interim super bantamweight title remained vacant. The Velodrome in Manchester, England was the venue.

*In the fight fight prior to Quigg-Munroe, Sergey Rabchenko (21-0, 16 KO) knocked out Ryan Rhodes (46-6, 31 KO) with a devastating body shot, to become the European junior middleweight champion. The fight had plenty of back and forth action. The first couple of rounds saw Rabchenko pressuring Rhodes. Rounds three and four belonged to Rhodes, as he displayed good movement, keeping his hands busy. The next three rounds were all Rabchenko as he moved forward connecting on Rhodes. Rhodes folded in round seven when Rabchenko landed a picture perfect shot to the body and was counted out.

*In woman’s action, Holly Holm (31-2-3, 9KO) scored a ten round unanimous decision over Anne Sophie Mathis (26-2, 22KO), to avenge a knockout loss to Mathis, last year in December. This time around, Holm utilized her boxing skills to keep Mathis at bay. Mathis tried to make it a slug-fest in her favor, but Holm’s did not fall for the prey and fought from the outside. The Route 66 Casino in Albuquerque, New Mexico is where the fight took place.

*Heavyweight top contender, Chris Arreola (35-2, 30 KOs) will not be fighting on the Ortiz-Lopez card this Saturday, June 23rd because of an injury. Arreola was scheduled to face Mike Mollo (20-3-1, 12 KOs). It was to be the Showtime televised opener. Team Arreola are keeping quiet on the specifics of the injury.

*Junior featherweight contender, Jonathan Oquendo (22-2, 15 KOs) received six months of probation, when he pleaded guilty to one charge of negligence in a Puerto Rican court. The charge is related to an ATV incident which resulted in the death of his girlfriend Melanie Miranda Columbus. Oquendo is currently the WBO Jr. featherweight Latino champion.
