Washington native Zach Cooper, who trains out of the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, continued the impressive start to his career this past weekend when he scored his second straight KO. This time, he put away Josh Solis in the third round. The fight was part of the Battle at the Boat 91 card that took place in the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Wash.
Cooper, who trains under Jeff Mayweather, was happy with the progress he made from his first time stepping in the ring as a professional.
“I liked this performance because my opponent was awkward. I had to adjust and make him fight my fight, and take my time and win the fight. In the first fight, I seen the shot open and took it,” Cooper said when asked to compare performances.
It really is hard to compare the two contests, however, because his first fight only lasted thirty seconds. Early in the career of a fighter, it is important to balance nice, easy wins that build confidence with fights that actually allow a fighter to learn and get in some work. When asked if he appreciated being able to get in a few rounds this time, Cooper agreed it was needed.
“It felt good. I needed the rounds. It gave me much needed experience. It also showed me that giving is better than receiving in this sport! I’m ready for June 1st now.”
Jeff Mayweather was also pleased with the work of his pupil. Having worked with champions such as Celestino Caballero and Sultan Ibragimov, he is hoping to lead Cooper to similar heights and beyond. Happy with the fight outcome, he noted that his fighter appeared to be pressing in the early going.
“Zach made adjustments because he was trying to fight too hard. I told him to relax and attack the body and he would finish the guy. He did exactly as I asked of him.”
At just 2-0, it’s too early to tell just how far of Zach Cooper may ultimately go. He appears to be in the right environment in Las Vegas to get the most out of his potential, however. When he returns to the ring in June, we will get to see the next step in the evolution of his game.
